September 21 Let Go Of The Apron StringsI firmly believe in protecting your children, but not to the point of mollycoddling them, after all, they won't learn important life lessons. I also understand that for some parents that gently letting go is extremely hard for them, but if they don't it's not good for that child as they grow in to adulthood.
My kids Infant/Junior school is 15 minutes away from my house, their Senior school is 25 minutes away - we/they walk each day. When Thomas started senior school, as did Mathew and as will Christian be, he was walked there for the first day, after that he was on his own (technically he has his older brother).
There are kids who live the same distance from the school who have NEVER walked there, there are kids who live even closer and have NEVER walked there or back and never will simply because of their parents fears. Yes, the roads are dangerous, but you have to let them go and cross the roads by themselves at some point, you cannot hold their hands or drive them everywhere forever. There are children who are not allowed to play out with their friends 'incase they get hurt'.
Give kids a bit of leeway, let them learn to make mistakes, let them cross the road; but more importantly let them grow up without being tied to the apron strings
